2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

19,000 people fit into the new Barclays Center to see Jay-Z perform. This blog was viewed about 94,000 times in 2012. If it were a concert at the Barclays Center, it would take about 5 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

  1. I just started a blog on snakes and my personal experience with them and want to connect with other snake lovers. Thanks.

    • Welcome, David. Feel free to subscribe to the blog, for further updates, or even link to my blog form yours if you like. Snakes are amazing and fascinating creatures that need advocacy. I’m always excited to see good sources of information on them, to help dispell the loads of misinformation out there. Good luck with your new blog.

    Hello,
I’m really interested in buying a ball python (not any time soon, but I really want to know the details before I become completely obsessed with them). The only problem is: I read this article about why you shouldn’t buy one from a pet store; apparently, african mites and whatnot can be found on the snake. I’m not sure whether I should deem the site reliable for the simple reason that the author is a breeder who could just be scaring people into buyung from him, but the info seems true. What is the best way to go about buying a ball python, breeders or pet stores? I don’t want to buy a snake and then get a mite/tic infested house :p

I’m not positive if you’ll read this, but if you do, please help me!

    Sincerely,
    Zaneshia

    • Zaneshia,

Keep in mind, that breeders are competing with pet shops, and have a bias toward your business coming to them. Many pet stores do sell captive bred Ball Pythons, as they can cost less to buy locally, than to have shipped from Africa. Whether you buy from a pet store or a breeder, please get a captive bred snake. There is simply no reason to take Ball Pythons out of the wild, when there are so many breeders in the U.S. Captive snakes are generally a little more expensive, but will be healthier and usually a little prettier as well. If you stick with a “normal” phase captive bred animal, you should be able to get one for around $50 or so. Keep in mind that breeders can get mites too. I’ve seen plenty if captive bred snakes with mites. Do some research and find at least 2 or 3 places selling Ball Pythons. Then go visit them, and choose a business that is clean and has animals that look healthy.

Thank you so much for your input; you definitely helped me a lot. I’ll be sure to do a lot more research before buying one. 🙂

        Sincerely,

Not sure if my reply to you on ball pythons came through. Feel free to email me with any questions. I have always boght me snakes at pet stores. You.get to see them that way and you can learn to see if they are sick. You can not do that ordering through mail.

Balls are great starters. Pet stores are good and bad. I bought mine at one and always have. Google how to tell if they are sick or have mights. Go to pet store and buy book first it should tell you. Write back if uou have any more questions

Beautiful photographs, and hard to see the kids holding the venomous snakes. Its a bit unnerving. My daughter recently found her first coral snake which I have a pic of on their sight http://scalelily.weebly.com but I didn’t let them hold it. It was however interesting to see the response of one of the boys there.

    • Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experience, Calvin! I’m glad you did not let anyone hold a Coral Snake. They have extremely potent venom, and there is currently no stock of anti-venom in the U.S., if you get bitten. That would be a bad day for everyone. It blows my mind, to see adults allowing their children to hold any venomous snake. I just don’t see the point.

      Thanks again!
